"10 000 marlin killed by MX boat"

LAST EDITED ON Jun-24-07 AT 06:52 AM (PDT) by MarlinNut (admin)

Mx TV showed a MX longliner that had an estimated 10 000 dead marlin onboard. The boat was boarded and inspected however they had all the correct paperwork and licenses and were fishing off Cabo and the boat is out of Ensenada.

Im trying to get pictures and the TV link to this news item to post here. The norma 029 according to Minerva is probably going to take longer than all thought to fight in the courts.

There were 3 massive longliners and seiners off the Gordo bank today and the Seamount. Its started so days like today will be few and far in the future.
Lots of tailers and hungry too

Titi showing us his casting to tailers

And this marlin thought he was a plane when he got hooked up forgot he was a fish and to go down under.

Cheers

Chris

A great day on the water - horrible to consider they could be coming to an end.

The rape of the resources is so significant right now as to be beyond comprehension. I just don't understand how that which is so obvious to us is so unapparent to the Mexican government. What do you do when you look and see the sky is blue, but the man says, "no, senor - the sky she is green?"

You cannot be a sportsman and not care about the fish. You can be a fisherman, but not a sportsman, and no self-respecting angler should settle for being just a fisherman.

I thought that this Norma 029 was for shark fishing! It just doesn't matter to these sorry SOB's.

10,000 freaking dead marlin, that is the beginning to the end. Sad to say it but true with this type of destruction of these profilic waters. SAD, VERY SAD.

What do you call 10,000 marlin, certainly not a few or a school but the Fuking stock for that species.

I'm sure it didn't take them long to achive those numbers. Really succks!

   I'm starting grieving already.

I wrote -of course- but it looks like most of the damage will already be done by the time NORMA029 gets repealed or modified ....even if it only takes a few months.

If almost all fisheries, worldwide, are not going to collapse from this sort of thing I suspect it would need the will by something like the U.N. to impose worldwide some basic, underlying rules to all fisheries everywhere.

rules that prevent you taking more than a fairly low percentage of the minimum sustainable biomass of a particular species out of an area - whatever the present stock level is like in that area and other areas. And stop any fishing that takes it as bycatch (even just 2 or 3 %)in that area when that amount has been reached.

Can't see it getting agreed - so let's just enjoy 'our' fish while we have them , and encourage our kids to play other sports.

I see the "inshore" herring stock off GOM getting heavily overfished (yes, closures now - but too late each year ; they've already been fished out) , anchovella and similar getting hammered off W. Africa, plans to fish krill in the Southern Ocean (starting quota of a tiny half million tonnes.... but we all know what will happen)

I remember what happened to Cabo Blanco.

So much energy to protect a fishery and a couple of boats can wipe it out in months. It's sick.

One thing wasn't clear in Chris' post. The boat had proper papers, etc, is there an implication that the permits supplied were shark permits?

Wonderful pictures Chris and as usual you have captured the moment. The hooka! smile says it all.

I have been lucky enough to have enjoyed some of the very best fshing experiences of my life off the Baja and I well up sometimes like now just thinking about it.I remember what they did to Magdalena.I went there once in the fall a few years back now.Thought I had died and gone to heaven. The clutches in my TLD 25's did.
In recent years I was in the right place at the right time again on the Finger Bank.Folks just cannot believe their eyes when they watch the videos. To think we may never see the likes of this again is a bitter pill to swallow and unreal the Mexican Government cannot see the wood from the trees.

The lyric of a Guns `N Roses tune comes to mind here which says "what we have here is a failure to communicate"

It is all so very very sad.As Fredster told us all before the plunder is everywhere and this could be the nail in the Baja Coffin unless we can try to win this fight whatever it takes.

Still the eternal optimist I still have hope and salute all you people's efforts who are on the ground there in trying to save this amazing resource and guiding us supporters from afar to where best to place our efforts be they financial or verbal it all helps.

Take care and be lucky Jon
