Game over!
East Cape weather has been picture perfect this week with calm seas and warm sunny days. There is a hint of humidity during the day. Water temps are now consistantly above 80 degrees

For the last month billfish have been spawning and have not had much of an appetite. It has been a cat and mouse game as they would be attracted to baits presented but just bat them around not allowing a hook set. We were having lots of events but only scoring on one out of five or six. The spawn is over and so is the little game. Now fish are hungry aggressively attacking lures trolled and sucking down baits.

Dorado and wahoo remain in the game as well but are scattered with no concentration. Most of the dorado are good grade in the 30 to 45 pound range but most of the wahoo are relatively small. In shore huge schools of jack cravelle are foaming on baits and roosterfish are also becoming active.

On another note. After 20 years of serving the East Capes scuba and snorkel requests we have liquidated Vista Sea Sport and will now just concentrate on fishing.

If you are looking for a place to go billfishing, it gets no better than it is right now in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. During the just-completed San Carlos Yacht Club/Rescate de San Carlos fishing tournament, 16 boats hooked up with over 300 billfish and released 182 on day 1 and 98 on day 2. The hot bite continues, so if you are looking to travel and catch fish, San Carlos is where you want to head for.

Incredible double blue marlin bite yesterday!!

Wish you could have seen it with my eyes...

Short corner monster Tomahawk in Dorado colors on short corner, when a giant whole in the water sucks it down as the short rigger double #64 rubber band goes off like a shotgun..BAMMMMM

My deckhand Mikey yells "hollycrap thats a big mama!!" She then launches straight at the boat and lands under my outrigger going 30mph in a matter of seconds...I black smoke it trying to get out of her way, the second jump is away from the boat, the line is still slack as if time is in the matrix, I can see the lure/hook in her mouth flying through the air...as it comes tight the hook pulls out...DAMN!!!

As the lure pulls tight from the second jump it tangles with the short rigger, so I slowed down for my crew to fix it...BAMMMMM the long rigger fish head Odagiri starts screaming out line....

I ran down and started clearing lines still in a daze from the big fish estimated over 600+lbs, this fish looks to be smaller around 400lbs and is instantly down to 200yds and jumping like a bat out of hell!! I neutral up the boat and try to get the lady angler to the chair but its rough in the channel...

I look back and its white wash to the horizon from this crazy marlin jumping in huge circles at full speed, the line goes limp...

0/2, on nice blue marlin in 30 seconds...we broke line on the second one she jumped on the line...

My mistake for not backing the drag off in the panic run with jumps out that far..been bonefishing too long and slow to the fight.

Epic good fun, just sorry we lost a great lure and 2 great fish, wouldnt trade it for anything, just seeing those fish going nuts at the same time was priceless.

back to fly fishing tomorrow...also fun but not blue marlin

We went 3 for 3 on blue marlin in our last day and a half, Saturday and Sunday tagging a 200, 300 and 650. we also caught two nice yellowfin, 100 and 130, in the blind while trolling for marlin. The blues had been slow here this spring but the yellowfin have growing in numbers steadily in our outside porpoise schools and now are filling in everywhere, we've had 4 shots at them catching three in the last couple weeks on the Monkey Biz II. Neutral el nino pattern means we'll have long and productive summer season here in Kona. We're ready!

I was going to start this weeks report by describing the fishing as slow but that is not accurate. After looking at some of the photos we captured a better description is spotty.

Conditions couldn't be nicer with warm sunny days, calm seas and tidy bowl blue water pushing 80 degrees. The sea is alive with huge spots of bait, turtles and manta rays. Striped marlin dorado and wahoo are all on the prowl. The only fish noticeably missing for this time of year is yellowfin tuna. They showed up late last year and it looks like this is going to be another late appearance.

The game fish have been spread over a large area with no real concentration. It has been a matter of working hard for the opportunity to present itself and being ready to take advantage. In an effort to increase action we have tried many different technics this week and found them all effective but none have triggered more action. It is just a waiting game paying our dues.

"Mr Lucky" aka Accurate Jack Nilsen fished with us this week and lived up to the name I have donned him. He wasn't on Jen Wren III 10 minutes when we hung a wahoo that weighed in excess of 60 pounds. This guy could fall in a bucket of you know what and end up with a hoo by the tail.

Also with us was Simrad's electronics wizzard Tito Perez. Every time he visits we learn more about our Simrad electronics and the tools we have to catch more fish. I may be sleeping in the bodega for a while but couldn't resist ordering 2 new NSS combination plotters for Jen Wren. Now both boats will have matching killer gear.
