Two quick thoughts on this:
I think the plastics industry has advanced over the years, allowing more combinations, fades, glitters, and the like. While my experience is more with freshwater soft plastics (bass worms etc.), I have to believe the industrial side of it has similar advances and pressures.

Capt. Miller has made comments around here about the need to catch anglers and offer multiple colors to stay competitive, even though he mentions personally fishing with only limited colors. I think I recall seeing similar comments from Peter Pakula here too.
