Default CALIFORNIA SWORDFISHING LANDINGS UP 383% THIS YEAR!!!!

From the International Game Fish Association bimonthly news letter -

PERCENT INCREASE IN CALIFORNIA SWORDFISH LANDINGS FROM 1999 TO 2000 (THROUGH AUGUST 23) - 383%.

SUSPECTED REASON FOR INCREASE - INFLUX OF LONGLINERS FROM HAWAII.

And they (PFMC) are talking about and giving consideration of possibly letting these same guys and others longline anywhere they want inside of the 200 miles EEZ too??? When will our Government Fish Managers wake up and realize that long lines do not belong in the ocean? What the hell is it going to finally take?

I wish I knew but if you find out you might like to pass the information on to Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations as we are headed down the same path.

What's it going to take? Political Pressure.
Who's doing the job? RFA, NCMC and IGFA

For the facts on the Alantic (as an example for the Pacific), get a copy of the Jan/Feb 2001 issue of the Big Game Fishing Journal on newsstands nationwide within a week. See my article, "Going, Going, Gone."

Hello Dave

Thanks for your recent advice on B&S with B/hoos.

As a newcomer to the severity of the dilemma facing the oceans of our planet the one thing which appears glaringly apparent is
the reluctance of the powers that be to put in place legislation to control the proven piscatorial genocide which has been and is still taking place on a global scale. The fact is we all care deeply but many of us me included do not know where to start as even subscribing to worthwhile organisations would appear futile. One common denominator which appears to me to be par for the course is when these tentative issues enter the corridors of power. Not much happens to change anything in a significant time frame to do any good ??.This is how it goes on home and away. The times I have heard people say "Governments. They just d'ont get it do they.As a kid I was fishing with my Grandfather all the time.He used to tell me how good it was some years ago. When I recall how the fishing was at that time it was unbelievable to the current state of affairs. The decline since the 60's is really alarming inline with the advances in marine technology. The way it looks at the moment "there can be only one"(The Highlander)and it is all downhill. The powers that influence the decisions which will really make a difference do not seem to care or are just puppets to absorb the global outcry.Dave if you can find a way to lead us all to Valhalla then please count me in.I appreciate this is not an easy nut to crack.I have friends who are/were commercial fishermen in times of plenty""and they have families to feed same as others the world over. All I know is if everyone keeps doing what they are doing now its all going belly up and the problems of out of work commercial fishermen which is happening as we speak will be just as acute.Food for thoughts which I expect you have had many time s over.

take care & be lucky JP
