Which Boat/Engines raises fish best?
As a fisherman, I have a lot of theorys :7 A recent post got me thinking, we have poured over best boat, fastest boat ect, but what is the best boat that raises marlin consistently? Yes I know it's the crew, captain, spread, homework ect ect, but there is something to certain boats and certain engines that bring fish into the spread in the same area as other boats in the same area more often than not. Is it the engines, or is it the hull? Would a pair of old 6/71's that Whap Whap Whap so loud you need ear plugs be the answer, or is it the smooth running Cummins Commonrails in a new Cabo that is the ticket? Is it the older Bertram/Hatt Hulls or maybe a 20 year old Pacifica 44? Personally, I think the more commotion a boat makes the more intrigued a billfish is, especially the bigger ones....seems they always hit the short corner!
So then fishing with Chris Badsey, who has raised and released over 200 fish in '05 alone, and not even close to being full time down south with his 48' Rampage with those powerful....but quiet C18's, throw's my theory right out the window!

RE: Which Boat/Engines raises fish best?
I think all diesels have a similar sound but hulls are a different story.
They say cold molded hulls have the right sound for fish but as you know this process is very costly.
Fiberglass hulls also raise fish on a consistent basis.
The winning boat of the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament got lucky when the first lure out got bit right away. Do you think the boat/motor had anything to do with it or just lucky?
I also think that having your motors in sync will raise more fish than not having the motors in sync and also the right rpms for that special hum. just my 2 cents.
Rgds,
Omar

RE: Which Boat/Engines raises fish best?
i think the size of the hull helps
but for the rest of it, it's all fud
having said that i don't like my exhausts under the water and clean wakes are good for the anglers to spot fish

Frankly, I'm amazed that a marlin would come within a mile of anything with a pounding engine onboard, no matter the brand. The fact that they come close at all makes me think there can't be that much of a difference ...

RE: Which Boat/Engines raises fish best?
Stan,
You may be right but from my experience almost all of my marlin caught on my Grady came on the riggers. Could it be all of the white water trail caused by the outboards as the reason to this.
On the Blackwatch they come in close as well as the other positions. Could be that the diesels provide nice clean alleys for the lures to run in and causes the prey instinict for the marlin to attack as they sense that the lure is attacking the bait ball(white wash from the props).
Peter Pakula says that the vibration not the flash of the mirrors on the withcdoctor is the main reason for this teaser getting whacked.
So maybe, the combined vibrations of the hull and motors are the key.

Hola Omar
The boat which won the LC Tournament was a 31ft "Moppie" and for some reason these boats seem to be good fish raisers.I used to fish a lot on Pisces "Tracy Anne" with Captain Benito Agundez years ago and this boat was a good fish raiser and marlin would come in real close to the transom. This boat was powered then by cats I think.
On Efren's old single engine Lurhs the short corner was hot and now on his twin cummins Crystaliner it is noticeable pattern best to begin on third wave and long corner seems best option on flats.
best Jon

31 Bertram with the 440 Chryslers raises the dead
Does just fine with the 250 Cummins too
46 Merrit with 903 Cummins raised alot of fish too

Don't forget the "wheels" here. I've heard stories about boats that raise fish like crazy, then for whatever reason, the owner changes the props and the fish count goes way down. Returning to the old props and the count comes back up.

RE: Which Boat/Engines raises fish best?
This is my observations on the water
44' Pacifica's short corner
Any Rybo or Merritt- riggers
Twin outboards- ONLY on the long riggers, and few and far between
My newest ride, 28' Ditmar/Cyrstaliner with a single Volvo KAMD 230 hp turbo straight inboard- short corners best.
I truly believe the hull history and power configuration determine the boats fish raising ability.
