Default Marlin - SWYC Tournament

Just me and my Dad out for two days of Marlin fishing in the SWYC Annual Marlin Tournament on the Gadget III. Left Saturday morning for ???. Would have left Friday night for San Clemente (we only do 8 knots if the current is with us) but the weather report was for 10-15 knots. So we were going to stay close and maybe go as far as Oceanside for the night depending on how much it blew. But the weather was good and we heard about all the action up off San Clemente so we kept heading that way. As usual the weather report wasn't worth anything and we were in the right place at the wrong time and the wrong place at the right time!

Late Saturday we were within a couple of hundred yards of Dos Ponchos when they hooked into a Marlin just around Wilsons Cove and close in to the island. They were probably within a 100 yards of feeding Purpoise when they got bit. Trolled that area for a while and then by the time we got to the hot bite area 3 miles out of NW Harbour it was late and we had to head for the anchorage. The Navy Seals entertained us with flares, machine gun fire and whatever else they do.

Left early Sunday morning for the hot bite area. But since we are slow, we had to simply pass through once and point it back to the Point. Within a couple of hours we were sick as the reports coming in on the radio from the area we had just left were reporting numerous feeders popping up every few minutes! But to far for us to go back and still make it home in time.

Snooper Too passed us going the other way and lo and behold they got up there and caught a fish! They just re-engined the boat so they had all the speed they needed to make it back in time for the 5:00 PM weigh in.

For us we saw and baited a 250-300 pound swordfish a few miles off of Fishhook but couldn't get him to go and he spooked quickly.

Live of Mike saw a number of feeders pop up close to the beach at Fishhook a while later but by then we didn't have enough time to go there and get back in time for the dinner.

Nothing all the way back as we crossed the 43 and then pointed it home. The water turned green and full of grass about 15 miles from the point so we pulled the lines, got the water hose and and washed the boat and the gear.

Fish on!
