Default First marlin on the year's first trip at the 267 (8-3-2008)

My son and I left Friday night to get bait at East receivers and anchored for the night just East of the Newport jetty. Spent the morning in the 14 to the 267 area and then decided to see what the east end of Cat looked like. We had not seen much and not much on the radio in the Newport/Dana area. Bad move! We found the hotter and dirty water but no encouraging signs and then we heard the action back in the 267 area. Trolled back to Newport for a great night inside the harbor and back out to the 267 at 6 am. Beautiful weather and the cleanest water you could imagine. Looped around the 267 and got bit just 2 miles south of the high spot at 10 minutes before the alarm went off to point it back to San Pedro. Fish came up on the stinger and before we could get a bait back he ate the moldcraft.

Nice fight on 30# mono and calm fish for the release. Jr. is shown wearing our "Malin" belt that a successful marlin angler has the honor of modeling. Nice to get one early. Looks like it may be a stellar year for us here in So Cal.

Go get 'em!

Warren

Too cool! Great photo's, but the video of the "Mahlin" dance was classic and needs to be uploaded here.

Way to get on the board early and I hope it turns out to be the flag fish for the KHMC.

I'm betting it is. I know we damned well didn't get it done ... :blackeye:

Stan,

Thanks for putting up the movie clip. The new digital cameras are just great!

On another board, where my son posted the trip report, someone asked him what the lure was "called". His very articulate answer is below.

'The lure is a moldcraft softhead rainbow color that we refer to as the "gay bob". Actually, the lure you see in the picture is a slightly gayer version of the "gay bob" because of a florescent orange streak. We now refer to it as the "flamin' bob". It's one of two lures that get bit really really well on our boat.'
