xJewelLure Fishing Report - Crows Nest Tourney 8/15-8/16
Fished the Crow's Nest Event at SCI this weekend with my dad and uncle. Started Friday at day break near the 289 after hearing a report of good YFT fishing under the porpoise on Thursday. Water looked good, but no life. Heard Bad Co. released a fish near the 43 and also heard some more tuna reports in the same area. Headed over to the 43. Around 1pm found a school of porpoise a mile or so south of the high spot. Got in front of them and caught a 19lb yft on the first drop with bait. We were thinking we were going to have some fun for quite a while but couldn't get another one. Dropped in front of the porpoise at least 6 more times and even tried trolling through them but no go...There just wasn't much volume there. Found one kelp the whole day holding one YT on the way to Pyramid that we couldn't get to bite. Pretty frustrating with all the dorado/dorito reports.
Saturday morning we decided we were going to fish the front side of Clemente but head outwards a little bit towards the Mackrel Bank to try and find the clean blue water we found near the 289 we found the day before. We figured it was moving NW. About 5 south of the Mack we found a pocket of cool clean water atop a 3 degree temp break with a kelp line. Hmmmmmmm....Didn't take long before we had a fish up on the short corner. Tried getting a dropback to it but it ate the jig before we could. 20 minute fight with a clean release. About 10 minutes after the release I spot a sleeper/tailer "slailer" in the glasses. Made a good cast on it but it wasn't interested. Found another tailer in the afternoon but lost it in the glasses after about a minute.
We ended up catching the only marlin for the tournament so we won that division. It was a great event and we certainly hope they do it next year. Tight Lines!
