Default SST charts

This is an open question to anyone, no matter where you fish in the world.

How much importance do you put on SST charts, how much are you prepared to pay for them (daily, weekly or monthly) and how reliable are they?

A few of us have been using a free service to get charts for Madeira over the last couple of seasons, the problem is that as it was a free service it was quite unreliable, sometimes going days or weeks with out updating the charts. So far this year the service hasn't been updated since the first few days of the year. Needless to say that at this time of the year it is not important as we are not fishing!!

I have been talking to a university here in the UK that gets global data daily, 52 weeks of the year. They have it proccesed within a few hours, for example that at 9 o'clock this morning the 12 noon charts from yesterday were available, They take data from a number of different sources, and its safe to say that when you overlay the different maps, they are all quite true to each other.

They have asked me if I think there is commercial value in the charts to fishermen - well I said yes (if only to get access to them myself!), but I would ask around and see what the feedback was. Basicly they are looking into making the charts available on a subscription service to help fund the projects that they are working on. The best thing is that they open on google earth and can be set to any area that a subscriber wishes. They are thinking of having 2 or 3 levels of subscription, each level would be more and more personal to a customers needs.

Let me know your thoughts on this, because if they do it right it could be an interesting service - a service that they say would get cheeper the more people subscribe to it.

Oliver with out going in to alot of detail I will give you what i know in a nut shell.

This link is a service that is under a hundred bucks a year and i have already sent them a E-mail about possibly adding a region in your area as they already have so many.
The service in really good for the price Terrafin SST-View Satellite Imagery Home Page
This service is allways upgrading with more features.

On the other end of the spectrum here is another service that is more expensive and has a comercial service that is close to $400.00 a month and offers features like being abble to give you the temperature down severail hundreds of feet not just the surface to be abble to see potential food gathering currents or if the SST reading is simply a shallow temperature
potentially putting you in the wrong area as we are alot like fish we and they really like certain temperatures/conditions.

Like I said this is the nut shell version so the reason the depth temperature is importaint is all the features are about conditions to narrow down a species preferred condition to narrow the target zone and where the food will most like be found with feature tools like SST Altimetry chlorophyll etc. all build plankton/food to start the food chain.

Ocean Imaging | Satellite & Environmental Services

Adding the science comercial & sportfishing data to this information is as good as it gets and i would be alot lees interested in fishing with out it as it has the potential to turn fishing in to catching while providing hunting the best part of fishing in my opinion from any where with a view from outer space to track your adversary day & night from anywhere.

Adding this kind of information to eddies cyclonic anticyclonic intersections of thermoclines etc. is where you get paid like a CEO straight from king Neptune.

Hi Ollie

Tell them to set up a demo on google earth. I wanna see it!

Call the Madeira Chamber of Commerce / Puplic Relations-Humiliation Department. They might fund the project for the first week in July.

Mikey, shoot me a PM with an email address and an area and I will fire over a google earth file. The only downside at the moment is the temps are in Kelvin, so need to do a bit of math to convert to degrees C (or F) I had another play with the server this afternoon and the amount of data on there is unreal.
