was this fish caught in July? Looks like July 5th, could someone confirm this for me? I would like to fish the Blue Marlin World Cup in Tahiti this July 4th 2012, but would like to know that the big fish are around at this time as well as Nov-Jan. Thanks for all comments and help on this.

Reading the catch report really makes you wonder just how difficult it would be to fight a fish like that on sportfishing tackle. The fish dragged a buoy around for 2 hours and was handlined for another two hours. How much drag would a buoy like the type used for artisanal tuna fishing put on a fish? 100 lbs? Probably a lot more if you were trying to drag it beneath the surface - and the buoy would float the fish to the surface whenever it tried to dive. Even with 130 lb tackle how many charter clients can sustain drag pressure anywhere close to 100 lbs for two hours, never mind four? It's really quite amazing that marlins of over 1,300 lb have actually been caught on rod and reel - although not too many of them.
I thinks its not about just straight drag pressure its about breaking the fishes spirit and taking adavantage of lactic acid build up after panic runs. Knowing when to back the drag off to near freespool, then knowing when to hammer sunset drag, angler, captain, then a crazy crew that can hold on to put the hurt on.

Any fish can be caught in 30 minutes if there are no mistakes, let her rest and its her game. Second wind is not an option.

wether your going for the kill or the release its better for the fish to make it quick

Stan, you can delete this thread if you feel it's inapropriate.
story in link translated to english ...

"Tetuaura Ti-Peacock, the fisher Tautira swordfish, still hit hard with this decision accusing 670 kilos below the balance and towed to port Monday noon from the concentration device (FAD) of Pueu.

peche400.jpgAlors that the trip was not planned that morning, Felix's father to get into town, Tetuaura, probably driven by intuition, convinced him to postpone his races and go with it.

She left the marina Tautira where his boat is moored about six o'clock dumatin headed for the FAD off Pueu. At the scene, she wets a dozen buoys. This is where the marlin are shown for the first time, taking a buoy and hook. But suddenly, he dives and disappears. Tetuaura trolling around the area, while seeking his poito.

At 8:30, the fish again, on the face and the buoy is caught. It will take two hours of struggle for the Haura surrender. Then knocked over, the monster is estimated at 600 pounds: it is impossible for the crew of two people to hoist the marlin on board; Tetuaura the rope through the gills and the rostrum and sailed to the marina where it comes Tautira alongside at 11:30.

There, the family is already waiting to help unload his catch while a small crowd of onlookers, alerted by word of mouth, began to gather around the marina. As soon as the fish is lifted by a backhoe and weighed: 670kg, beating personal best for the girl!
Cutting and turning on the ice begin immediately; this part of the body will go to the sale, the rest will be distributed to the villagers present on the platform, tradition requires. With poti "pink" Tetuaura may not have finished talking to her.
