Lost my favorite Black Bart..Quick Question
I lost my Black Bart Tahitian Prowler to a big Wahoo last weekend....Very sad. Just curious how many lures you lose in a season of fishing?

Re: Lost my favorite Black Bart..Quick Question
Depends a lot on the season. We get a lot of sharks in SoCal, especially if we troll too slow, and that's a really good way to lose lures. In seasons when we see a lot of marlin, failure to re-rig after a release is another way to cost yourself a lure.

Re: Lost my favorite Black Bart..Quick Question
Sorry to hear about your loss
Gander Mountain in Palm Beach Gardens has some Black Bart lures discounted and buy one, get one free -- I got 4 skirted lures (Pro Jet, Mini 1656 Flat, El Squid Sr., and Cabo Prowler) for $80. The choices are limited, but if you want what they've got, you'll get a good deal.
Most of my lure losses are my own mistakes -- being sloppy while changing things out, or clearing tangles. I've lost a couple to wahoo over the years, but I've landed enough 'cuda to know that the razor gang doesn't always have to win. Don't take your engine out of gear unless you must.....

Re: Lost my favorite Black Bart..Quick Question
Dustin - To whom do we need to send new gloves?!
Gaff a wahoo -- I've not done such a thing since I learned how nicely they just slide in the transom/tuna door. No muss, no fuss, just slide them in right no to the ice. Of course, I've never had a 70# wahoo on the end of my line.

Re: Lost my favorite Black Bart..Quick Question
Sounds good in theory but without a gaff you have no control over the fish when it comes on board. With those jaws full of razor sharp teeth I'd imagine an accident would be a matter of when not if...

Re: Lost my favorite Black Bart..Quick Question
My in-deck fish box is inches in front of my transom door, there really isn't much to it, open then both slide the fish in, drop the lid, once the fish chills a bit you unhook it. Several of us in south Florida use this method, especially short handed. The fish don't frequently have that violent reaction when you DON'T stick the steel through them. If I were catching multiples (i.e. double headers), or large wahoo, I might look at doing something else, although I've also used a tuna door followed by a tail grab on a boat w/o a in-deck fishbox on a day with multiple double/triple headers.
