RE: penn vs tiagra 130
Hey Chris,
Don't worry, all shimano has done is address the weakness points the 130's had. They have the stronger hollow drive shaft and stronger more rust resistent bearings. These were the two Achilles heel of the reels and they fixed them, a very good thing! The handles weren't that great so they changed that, they're better now, cool. they also added that click click click rachet feature to the drag lever which is nice, now if your decky forgets to push the drag up before you run home and you loose a whole spool of line he can't say the lever rattled back from the vibration, you can dock him a day's pay!
Same great drag, no changes to the fundamental stuff. Very smart move on Shimano's part and the consumer wins.
Enjoy
Chip
P.S. If you like you can send me 5 of your new 130's and I'll test them for you here in Kona and on the GBR, put a hundred days or so on them and send them back to ya the end of Nov. They should be broken in just right for Brazil after that!

RE: penn vs tiagra 130
Chip, thanks for the info and I agree the improvements are for the better. Never had a drag slide down on me but know many have had that problem from vibtrations. Now the handles have improved also and looking forward to testing mine out.
Chip: whats your address to send the reels so you can warm them up for me and break them in. I need them back for Brazil by Nov, Dec, Jan & Feb :+

RE: penn vs tiagra 130
(nice bit of snipping , Stan ! and ....)
isn't it nice to see Chip & Chris co-operating so wholeheartedly over "running in" Chris's new Tigras ?
;)
was there ever a model of lever-drag reel that really needed extensive running in ? Not just warm the drag a bit before setting it, but running off several hundred yards a few times, under some pressure ?

RE: penn vs tiagra 130
[font color="navy" face="comic sans ms" size="2"]Chris, Chip... when I run out and back from the fishing grounds I sunset the drags on my reels to avoid water getting into the drag system... you know... they sometimes get splashed with salt water but wouldn't sunsetting the drag also help to avoid the vibrations??
[font color="navy" face="comic sans ms" size="2"]I agree the new style handle was a much needed improvement, I don't know if you guys remember but back in August I bought me a new set of 5 Tiagras 80 I did not know new ones were coming out so yes mines are the old style... coming from all Penn I was happy with my new reels but the only one thing I complained about was the handle... terrible, there is even a thread about it somewhere on the archives, anyway... I ended up changing the handles on mines,
http://www.reelcolors.com/reelcolors004017.jpg
[font color="navy" face="comic sans ms" size="2"]and I'm now completely happy and in love with my older style Tiagras. They are the www.reelcolors.com handles, I bought them at the Miami Boat Show for $40.00 a piece and IMO they are the most confortable and best looking handles out in the market.

RE: penn vs tiagra 130 - Tip
Another tip regardless of the make of reel is to keep the handle at the lowest point relative to the reel while in storage in a rack or in a rod holder while fishing. With the handle at the lowest point relative to the reel, water spray will hit the side of the reel or handle and the water will run off the reel - not toward the drags. With a handle up or even at 45 degrees the salt water spray collecting on the handle will channel water and salt deposits down the handle to the drags and bearings.
Having the handles of all the trolling outfits in the down position while fishing makes it faster and easier to get on a reel handle when a fish is up in the pattern, since all reel handles are now in the same down uniform position and all on board know this.
As you mentioned Paco - always put a reel in sunset when you are running, but, especially when you are washing them off with fresh water. Best not to ever spray a reel - just wipe them down with a wet cloth, sponge or chamois. More reels are screwed up by fresh water from a hose than just spray from salt water. Finish off by drying the reel and rod and give a wipe with corrosion block on a rag to keep them shiny.

RE: penn vs tiagra 130 - Tip
Does anyone know if the older Tiagras can be upgraded by changing a few parts (drag quadrant and lever, handle, spool shaft etc.)?
Cheers,
Chris

[font color="navy" face="comic sans ms" size="2"]Chris,
[font color="navy" face="comic sans ms" size="2"]For sure they will take upgrades with after-market stuff just like I changed the handles on mines, also you can upgrade by having someone do custom work on them.
[font color="navy" face="comic sans ms" size="2"]Without seeing or reading much about the newer Tiagra models I would bet my http://messenger.msn.com/MMM2005-03-...cons/58_58.gif 's that they will not take any parts directly from the newer models.
It's just like everything else in life... they want to make you buy the new stuff and throw away the old stuff http://messenger.msn.com/MMM2005-03-...cons/48_48.gif

RE: penn vs tiagra 130
Chris,
Darn, if you need them back by Nov. I won't be able to complete the GBR part of the test/warm up/run in for ya!
Funny, the drag lever rattling back thing never happened to me before either, even when trolling with only 5 or so pounds of drag on the 130 tiagra's. Also funny how the problem seemed to plague the same few guys more than once, even following one particular young bloke to three different boats. Running out and leaving a reel in freespool with no clicker, CRACK "what was that?" "oh, um, ahh" Morning after the big tournament briefing sponsered by Capt. Morgan. I believe he works construction in SoCal now.
I've also seen a half mile of 130 along the highway more than a few times here and since the advent of high vis it's much easier to follow the the line back to the end with your snap.;)
At any rate the click click drag lever thing is cool and was really handy fishing ultra lite on the new 12s and 16s last Feb. and can't wait to try that feature out this summer on your new 130's!!:+
Aloha,
Chip

RE: penn vs tiagra 130
Re: Upgrades.
The handles will retrofit to the old Tiagra's but the side plate covers with the holes will not. Anyone interested in the new handles shoot me an email as we are putting a list together as they will be in short supply for quite some time.
