Bart & hays hooks

Would anyone have any tips on the best way to sharpen Pa hooks. They don't seem that sharp out of the packet & my usual methods, files etc
have only had limited success.Thanks

They do not need sharpening. But if you want to use a fine file, keeping the same shape and then put on a buffing wheel with polish.

I use 280 or 320 grit wet&dry glued to a small flat stick for touch ups on both hays and paa. If its a reshaping job then a dremel tool with the light brown colored stone works, just dont over heat.

I recently recieved some Paa"s and they were not so sharp. I have tipped mine using a diamond file and polished up with 400grit wet&dry. A file won't touch them.

Re: Bart & hays hooks

Unfortunately I have to say that I agree about the Pa'a hooks not seeming to be that sharp out of the box. I wouldn't be anywhere near as concerned if it were recommended that the hooks all be re-shaped; but I know Jack at BBL, Bart and now Dave here in this thread have given a bit of a frown whenever it is mentioned. Not sharpening a hook that is suitable for heavy tackle is just unheard of for a guy like me, I got some of the pa'a hooks recently but they ended up getting rigged in my father's Blue Marlin lures as I couldn't put them in the lure and not touch it with a file

Question: Is it more that their design ensures that they roll into that soft membrane between the jaw and skull on a fish that takes away the need to sharpen?
