06/01/2006: "Using the MarlinBlog, Pt 1"
If you're reading this, then you've already taken the first big step into the SCMO blogosphere, and for that I thank you. But the MarlinBlog is an interactive tool, and I want you to be, well, interactive! So, this is the first in a series of entries where we'll talk about how to use the MB and get yourself involved - and, hopefully, hooked!
The "homepage" for the MB lists the last week's entries, grouped by day. So if I'm particularly prolific and make three entries today, you'll see a heading for "Wednesday, June 1st" and a border surrounding the three entries. Don't get your hopes up that you'll always see that many!
At the bottom of the entry, you'll see who made the entry - for now, that's just me - and when I made it. You'll also see a couple of very important links that you need to know about.
The first looks like this: [link] - it's a permanent link to the particular entry. That's important, because the contents of the homepage will change every time I make a new entry. Using the permanent link, you'll always be able to access that particulary entry, no matter how long ago it was created. For experienced bloggers, using those permalinks lets you make a link from an entry in your blog to the entry in my blog. You can also use it to link from the Marlin Club, for example, if you saw something you just had to share with your friends.
Sometimes, that same link will look different - like this: [more..]. It's still the permanent link, but this means that the entry has more information than just what you see on the homepage. By clicking on the link, you'll be able to see the entire entry. Usually, I use this if there's a lot of pictures that I don't want you to have to load every time you go to the MB homepage. Usually, I'll use something witty like "More after the jump ..." to tip you that there's more to come.
Next time - let's talk about comments!
