06/01/2006: "Hurricane Season - Day One"

Hard to believe, but the 2006 hurricane season begins today. We all pray its nothing like last year - we could really use a mild one, Lord! More than that, I hope everyone has learned the lessons of Katrina. God knows there were plenty to go around.

For the government: 1) don't wait - act!; 2) more aid is better than less aid; 3) don't assume the old plans will still work. Heck, don't assume, period!

For the people: 1) when they tell you to go, GO; 2) don't blame the government for the effects of what is basically your own decision; 3) don't live below sea level.

My fingers are crossed ...

FYI, People have been living below sea level in NO for over 200 yrs. Maybe their luck finally ran out or maybe the depletion of the marshland and the inattention to the local environment in exchange for development is to blame, but I hardly think we should have made 1million folks move above sea level when the majority of NO wasn't even considered by FEMA to have been in a flood proned zone. Having grown up there, I can tell you that areas that flooded this time have never flooded before.
