06/20/2006: "Attention Potheads: Welcome to WeHo"
You gotta love the little burg of West Hollwood. Not content to dabble in the politics of certain alternative lifestyle choices or the "human rights" of animals, the WeHo City Council has decided that they know best when it comes to drug law enforcement. More specifically, they think they know best which laws not to enforce.
The City Council approved a resolution that urges the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to make marijuana-related offenses a "low priority" that deputies should largely ignore.
In doing so, it became the first city in Southern California to request that its law enforcement agency look the other way at recreational pot use and target only the sale of marijuana.
As you might imagine, LA Sherriff Lee Baca has a different opinion.
West Hollywood isn't the first to try this. San Francisco and Oakland each have similar laws on their books. The difference is that they have their own police forces, and exert some kind of control. All WeHo can really do is ask nicely.
Of course, they could always cancel their contract with the Sherriff's Department and form their own police force. I can even see the slogan - "To Protect and Look Fabulous" ...
