06/22/2006: "USA!! USA!! ... or not ..."
So much for "the greatest US World Cup team ever". Anyone looking for the gritty performance in the draw against Italy to bleed (literally) over into today's match against Ghana was surely disappointed. The US had their chances, but they didn't look like a team that knew they needed to win to move on.
Sure, there will be talk about the iffy penalty called in injury time of the first half that led to a converted penalty shot - the ultimate difference in the final score. But when your opponents score as many goals for your team as you do (1 own goal, 1 real goal), you really don't have much to complain about.
So now it's time for the retribution. We may not understand futbol, but we understand winning and losing, and won't tolerate the latter. This team may have overachieved in 2002, but they looked old and slow most of the time, and I suspect we've seen the last of many of the starters.
Oh, has anyone seen Landon Donovan? I heard he was going to play for Team USA in this tourney, but apparently he forgot to show up ...
BTW - congrats to the Aussies. Their draw against Croatia put the Socceroos in the elimination round.
