06/27/2006: "It's Not Just a Hot Dog"
Thomas G. Arthur died earlier this month in St. Louis. Chances are, you have no idea who he was. But if you are a Los Angeles baseball fan over 30, I guarantee he had an impact on your life.
Tom Arthur invented the DodgerDog.
Initially called a "foot-long" (even though it was really only ten inches in length - see, I'm not the only one who lies about it!), the DodgerDog was introduced at the opening of Dodger Stadium in 1962 as a tribute to the Nathan's foot long dogs served at Coney Island. Although sushi, nachos and God knows what else have invaded the stadium since his company left in 1990, none will ever hold the place in the hearts of true fans occupied by Tom Arthur's creation.
On July 7th, I'll be in the bleachers for the Giants game. In between waves and chants of "Baaaaarry" I'll down my share of DDs and when I do, I'll think of Tom ...
