07/13/2006: "Conspiracy Theorists, Start Your Engines ..."

AW747 (13k image)So, I'm driving back to work from lunch today along Westchester Parkway on the north side of LAX. Not only is it a quick way back to the plant from where I was parked at the beach, but it affords a good view of the airport, and I'm something of a plane nut.

Parked among the aircraft out front of the maintenance hangers sits an all-white, unmarked 747. All the windows are painted over save those in the upstairs lounge. Not a mark on the plane so far as I could see as I sailed past - not even a visible registration number.

This got the juices flowing, so when I got back to my office I consulted the source of all knowledge - Google. I punch in "all-white 747" and what do you know - a hit! Not only did they have this picture - which is a dead ringer for what I saw, but there was this entry:

An unmarked, all white, Boeing 747 Jumbo jet approaches landing at LAX, Los Angeles, California - I don't know what the deal is with these all white planes but have seen some since

... and it cuts off there.

So ... is there a simple answer, or is the meaning deeper ... and more sinister (insert evil laugh here).

Anyone have the answer to these mystery planes - or at least a good theory? Drop me a line!

Stan, doubtful the windows were painted over. Most likely they were filled in as a freighter conversion. Get the tail #s off the plane, contact the FAA and you can find out boatloads (pun not intended) of info such as who owns it, etc.

Gee, you work for Boeing, you should know this stuff.

At least the blog post is original.

(note - not "e-rendition" !)

Interesting what Steve Mras said about freighter conversion - weren't any 747s made as freighter variants (no windows put in, in the first place) ?
