07/19/2006: "Sweet Summer Rain"
I don't get back to the Midwest often, and, raised in California, I've never experienced a lot of what makes the region special.
One of the things I really wanted to witness was a real midwest thunderstorm, but the weather didn't seem likely. Wrong. I'm getting my wish right now in a big way. Awesome lightning show going on accompanied by booming thunder and buckets of rain (click on the map and you can see just how intense it is - I'm in the crosshairs ... literally!). The power is out in the hotel (god bless the wireless connection), and it appears to be so for at least a couple of blocks, since signals are down as well.
You can hear the thunder roll across the plains for miles and now that the sun is going down the only illumination is the lightning. Of course, it's still 90 degrees outside ... ouch! Damned impressive show - sure beats watching SportsCenter. I'm gonna curl up in the window bay and enjoy it.
