12/06/2006: "Road? Meet Rubber ..."
There's an old saying that engineers love to quote:
One Test is Worth a Thousand Expert Opinions.
That's because nothing speaks to the truth like facts and data. On my software project, we have very little data. Lots of opinions, crafted over the past year by both supporters and naysayers, but frighteningly little data.
That all changes today. At 6:30 this morning, or a little over 2 hours from now, we'll be turning on our system and going live into a production area of the satellite factory. We'll let real people use the system to try and do what they do - build satellites - and get real feedback on what we've done right and what we've done wrong. It'll be brutal, since we already know we have things to fix, but it'll be priceless in terms of telling us where we are with the development and how far we have to go.
It should be an interesting morning ...
