06/06/2007: "6/6/44 ... Never Forget ..."
Those of us too young to remember World War Two are aghast when we hear of 3,000 soldiers having been killed over the four years of the Iraq War. Certainly each of those lives is precious, but sometimes you have to put things into perspective.
Sixty-three years ago, Allied troops hit the beaches in southern France in a series of landings that came to be known simply as "D-Day". When that day was over, 2500 of those troops lay dead in the surf and on the sand. One day ... 2500 lives. Each of those lives were precious, too.
Vin Scully, the great Dodger broadcaster, wouldn't publicly complain if his feet were on fire. Yet in tonight's broadcast, Vin lamented the lack of rememberance by the media of this significant day. Each year, he said, the space given to the story gets smaller and smaller. We cannot forget, he said.
I agree.
