06/11/2007: "Heiress-Free Sports Rant"

Despite Paris Pong being the most popular sport of the weekend, we're not gonna talk about it here. But we are gonna talk ...

- Lewis Hamilton accomplished the inevitable this weekend, winning the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. The 21-year-old rookie had finished no lower than third in his five previous starts, and it was just a matter of time until he drove his McLaren Mercedes to victory. He started from the pole, and was never really challenged - the only time the field got close was during several caution periods.

Americans are basically ignorant when it comes to Formula 1, but they'll see a lot of coverage of this victory. You see, while Britain and the rest of the world will concentrate on the amazing skills Hamilton has at such an early age, the American press will focus on just one thing: Hamiliton's father is African, making him the first black driver to win in F1. It'll bring some attention to the United States Grand Prix, which will be run next week at Indy, and you'll hear comparisons to Tiger Woods - another mixed race "pioneer".

How sad that the story of a talented individual should be so dominated in America by his race. Maybe that shows just how far we have to go - we can talk about equality, but so long as the race of an individual is considered to be newsworthy, are we really equal?

Screw the American press - well done, Lewis!

- Suzann Pettersen won the LPGA McDonalds Championship over the weekend, but that wasn't the real story. While Pettersen finished at -14, Michelle Wie ended up dead last at +21. I don't care how sore her wrist is - there is no excuse for this. Someone please save her from herself - it's clear no one in her posse is gonna ...

- Last year, the Florida Marlins reached the low point in their season when they were 11 and 31. From their, the team gelled and they actually got back to .500 before fading at the end. What a difference a year makes. Coming into the weekend, the Fish were 31-31 in a tough division. Don't know if they can close like last year, but at least they're putting out an entertaining product.

- Did you know the NHL playoffs were over? Can you name the winner? It's the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim ... er, the Anaheim Ducks. It's pretty hard to take a sport seriously when they don't even televise their games until you get to the finals, but that's the sad state of hockey. Most of the Canadian teams have left for greener - as in greenbacks - pastures in the States, and now the Stanley Cup resides in the OC. Of course, there's not a lot of respect in Anaheim, either - they didn't get a parade, just a party in the parking lot. Personally, I think they'd have won it earlier if they'd dropped the whole Disney cartoon thing - karma, baby ...

Lewis Hamilton came as something of a surprise to the general English population (doing so well in his very first season in F1), but if you look at his resume he has been a champion for quite a few years.

First a champion junior Karter, then a champion Kart driver then winner and champion in various "lesser" racing formulas (including Formula Ford and F3)

Sort of reminds me of Ayrton Senna. Wonder if he will be as great? It is certainly looking possible at themoment.

Clearly, Ron Dennis saw something special in Hamilton, because he doesn't turn the keys over to just anyone. Still pretty impressive that someone so young could start so strong - spot on with the Senna comparison, except Lewis appears to have a personality ... razz

I see he won again at Indy - he is beginning to look consistent as well as gifted

(though - come to think of it - anyone who'd looked at his early career could tell you he is a consistent winner)

It's nice that a "new" talent has the best car in his first year at F1
