06/12/2007: "Baca In Deep Caca ..."
So, you think your job sucks lately? It could be worse - you could be Los Angeles County Sherriff Lee Baca. As the CEO of one of the largest jail systems in the world, Baca has given an early release to thousands of prisoners, usually because he was out of room. The reaction of the public was usually to stifle a yawn and talk about the need to build more prisons - so long as they didn't have to pay for them.
But when Baca gave an early release to Paris the Heiress on Thursday, holy hell - you'd have thought he'd released a serial killer! He's gotten an earful from every elected official and justice-fighting wannabe on the planet. And if you thought having to sit down with Al Sharpton (Al Sharpton? What the hell is he doing out there? Hey Al - STFU and go home!), now he's facing a recall campaign led by someone who - wait for it - once served time in Baca's jail!
Andrew Ahlering conceded that recalling Baca would be costly and time-consuming but said the public frenzy about Hilton's release could generate the necessary interest. He discussed the recall drive live on CNN Headline News and has been interviewed by half a dozen local television and radio stations.
"It's a massive undertaking," Ahlering said by telephone while preparing for an appearance on CNN's "Nancy Grace" show.
Ahlering is familiar with Baca's jails. He served 23 days in County Jail last year after he was accused of disrupting a Board of Supervisors' meeting. He later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge. He was placed on probation and ordered to stay away from board meetings.
Let's see ... failed political candidate sees opportunity in a sea of press microphones to stick it to the guy who locked him up. Nope - nothing fishy here ...
Look, I'm the last guy who ever thought he'd find himself quoting Paris Hilton on anything, but about at least one aspect of this whole sad saga she got it right: These guys really should be focusing their energy on something more important than this!
I wonder if we can recall Sharpton?
