09/05/2007: "Bad News For A Good Man"
As I write this, adventurer extraordinaire Steve Fossett is missing after leaving a Nevada airport in a private plane on Monday. Search parties are looking for the presumed wreckage, but as yet have seen no sign of Fossett's plane.
In a world where the term "amazing" is tossed about far too easily, Steve Fossett is a truly amazing person. He holds over 100 world records or firsts in five different sports. His accomplishments are so wide-ranging as to be mind-boggling: first man to circumnavigate the globe in a single handed airplane; first to so the same in a balloon; circumnavigated the world in a yacht; ran the Ironman Triathalon; raced the Iditarod Sled Dog race. His flight was a scouting mission for locations for his latest challenge - breaking the world land speed record in a jet racer.
For all his accomplishments, Fossett doesn't consider himself a daredevil - he works out every detail until he feels it can be reasonably accomplished, then does it. And he's shown an ability to take care of himself - he once had to walk 30 miles for held after an aborted flight.
An amazing man, and a national treasure. Say a prayer.
