Nothing To See Here, or Your Tax Dollars At Work

With all the hoo-haw about body scanners and overly personal airport searches, the Transportation Security Administration has been in the news quite a bit lately. Formed knee-jerk style in the aftermath of 9-11, the TSA is responsible for maintaining security on all forms of public transit in America – although nowhere are they as visible … or reviled … as in the departure terminal at your local airport.

Frankly, I don’t understand what the big deal is – you pass through a scanner that has no camera and no way for the operator to connect the image on the screen to the person being scanned, and you get cleared with no one having to touch you. Seems like a win-win to me, but like everything in our post-9-11 world, it needs a little tweaking.

There are protests and boycotts and petitions going around in an attempt to do something … anything … to improve the system, but I prefer my favorite weapon in such times. I therefore bring you an advance look at the 2010 Girls of the TSA calendar …

I’m sure that’s got your junk tingling … either that, or you’re standing too close to the scanner again. This particular meme has been rolling around the internet in email form for the last few days, and I figured it was time it made it into the blogosphere – props to the guy … and girl … who made it happen.

What’s The Deal With The Hooker Dress?

You’d think if there was anyone who doesn’t need any more publicity right now it’d be ESPN’s sideline reporter Erin Andrews.  She recently learned the hard way that 1) peephole cameras really do exist and 2) if you threaten to sue every website running a video they claim is you skipping around your hotel room naked, you pretty much confirm it really is you in the video.  Live and learn, I’m sure she’s thinking.  OK, maybe not, but it doesn’t help that she’s now being dragged into a fresh controversy by choosing to attend the recent ESPY Awards in … dum DUM dum … that dress.

I’m not going to pretend that I know much about women’s fashion.  I know what I like, of course, and I know that it’s seldom what they want to wear.  But I’m the last guy you want to ask for advice on how a woman should dress.

There’s one thing I do know about women and fashion, though – that’s it’s a mortal sin to be caught wearing the same dress as someone else.  The magnitude of the crime increases as you rise in social standing, becoming felonious once you reach the celebrity ranks.  It doesn’t matter how nice the dress is, how wonderful it looks on your or how seemingly exclusive it might be.  A celebrity would rather be caught in a burlap sack than have  someone say, “Isn’t that the number I saw (fill in the blank) wearing last week?”

So I was left scratching my head when I saw the same dress popping up over and over on the red carpet in recent months (hey, it’s research, OK?).  At first, I thought I might be imagining things, but then other bloggers noticed it and began to comment as well.  It’s not so much that the same dress keeps reappearing as much as the nature of the dress itself.  How do I describe this tastefully … OK, it’s a hooker dress.

Hmm ... where have I seen that dress before?

That's right - it was on Doutzen Kroes ...

For the record, it’s a “Black Strapless Minidress with Suntan Inserts,” from Herve Leger Spring Collection. Retail price is $1,900, but you can get it for $1393.60 from the kids at Milk in WeHo. Of course, with the rise in relevance of people who shop and dress celebrities, maybe it’s actually the same dress, handed off from one star to another. Hate to pay that dry cleaning bill …

Oh, the decisions women have to make, and knowing there are knuckleheads like me waiting to criticize them can’t help.  All I have to do is make sure I’m zipped up … :-)

Timeless Eye Candy

It was never easy to be Farrah Fawcett. Beautiful blonde model from Texas, she’s cast on “Charlie’s Angels” and they promptly develop a new term to describe actresses like her – “T & A”. She walks away from the show in a dispute over what that T & A is worth, and she’s blackballed by the industry for two decades. When she contracts as embarassing a form of cancer as you might imagine – anal – the folks at UCLA share that fact with the National Enquirer. Even when she dies, Michael Jackson kicks the bucket hours later, stealing her spotlight once again.

Here at the MarlinBlog, we remember Farrah from her first introduction to the world – that poster. You know the one I’m talking about – you probably had it on your wall as a kid. I know I did … and so did a lot of others, considering the sales. One of the ways you know you’ve made an impact on pop culture is when people want to imitate you; considering the collection at right, her impact is clear.

They’re going to rerun “Farrah’s Story,” the documentary Fawcett herself made about her fight with cancer, tonight on NBC. Watch it if you can; for now, we remember her as she was …

Facebook Friends?

As you doubtless know, we love to stay abreast of the latest technology here at SCMO. That’s why we just went through the pain of upgrading our forums to utilize the latest vBulletin and Photopost software, and will soon be doing the same to this very blog so we can get the benefits of the industry-leading WordPress product. We’re not just on the cutting edge – we’re on the bleeding edge!

One of the latest trends has been the phenomenon known as social networking. Networking isn’t a new concept – people have been gathering in watering holes for as long as man has been a social creature. But new tools give us the ability to reach out far beyond the end of the bar.

Two of those tools, Twitter and Facebook, have been integrated into SCMO as part of our upgrades. Our Twitter feed includes tidbits from the Home Office staff, info about upgrades and other happenings around the site, and, during the local tourney season, serves as a liveblog for the latest off the water action. Our Facebook page serves as a portal for lots of people to learn about SCMO and our mission, and as an outpost of sanity in the growing craziness of that community. If you haven’t checked the two out, take a moment to do so now.

Speaking of abreast, or to be absolutely correct, four breasts, we’re not the only ones to find the benefit of social networking. Here we have models Doutzen Kroes and Alessandra Ambrosio reminding us that the Victoria Secret models are now on Facebook, too. C’mon, Ale – friend me! I’ll behave … promise … :-)

Still Rocking …

In keeping with our rock and roll theme today, we bring an update on rocker Joan Jett. A founding member of ’70s girl group The Runaways, Joan went on to have the most solo success of any of the bandmates. Now, she’s serving as an advisor to a biopic about the Runaway days.

The Runaways hit the scene my senior year of high school. Most of the guys wanted either singer Cherie Currie for her looks or guitarist Lita Ford for her rack. But I was always Joan Jett fan – she seemed to the one in the bunch who was the most serious about the music, and that’s always been what was important to me – then and now. Long after the other girls had burned out – or sold out – Jett continues to rock it.

There’s something to be said about being true to your roots, and Joan is clearly that. A Philly girl through and through, she still looks like she stepped out of a Ramones shoot at age 50! You go, girl!
